Every year the kids get to pick their favorite meal around their birthday and they help make it. We were a couple weeks late but Megan got hers tonight. Beef flank steak in home made soy ginger marinade with scalloped potatoes and "squeaky" beans. Squeaky beans are simply fresh and crunchy green beans.
Elise and I had a conversation that went like this during dinner...
Elise (who is almost 8 years old): I am not eating that, I am a vegetamian. I won't eat "aminals".
Me: Really, you know vegetarians don't eat pepperoni pizza either
Elise: That's alright, I'll eat veggie delight pizza. I'm not eating milk or eggs or fish either.
Me: hmmm, no cheese on your pizza or ice cream huh?
Elise: (deep thought)
Me: Tomorrow I was planning to make hot dog* roll ups.
Elise: UGHHH, I am going to be a vegetamian the day after tomorrow.
Megan and I could not help laughing at her quick recovery. Not yet 8 and already putting off healthy lifestyle changes for later in the week! That's my girl!
*On a side note I have to mention that, although I am not Jewish, I take advantage of their strict food guidelines and only buy Kosher Beef hot dogs. I may spend more, but the absence of snouts and tails makes it all worth it!

Too funny! Where do children get these ideas from? I love it!
By the way, Megan's birthday dinner sounds d'lish! But then I am not vegetamian!
I am not surprised at all, as she is so concerned about the animals.
Boy, that flank steak is our favorite.. oh, I bet you knew that!
HAHA! If she only knew that hot dogs were the grossest of all meat products! I was a vegetamian for 9 years and the two things I missed most were tacos and hot dogs! LOL.
I've been THINKING of becoming a vegetamian for quite some time. Enjoyed the post. You are too young to remember Art Linkletter's Kids Say the Darnedest Things.
Sound like her and "Lucy" need to get together for a whole new product line! I love your sidebar description of her and after reading this...it fits! My kind of girl.
Debbie
Ha!! Now thats funny!!
Too cute
Ha! Now that's my kind of 8 year old girl, but I must say Megan's choice for dinner sounds fabu.
The flank steak sound yum and I LOVE the name Squeaky Beans. My kids (especially when they were younger) always had the most outlandish names for their favorite meal and TBHITW's mom STILL makes "Jimmy Chicken" whenever we go back to Michigan. Brings back some nice memories. Glad to read the block has gone.
That's some dinner she picked out!! I wouldn't know how to make it.
Lucky you your kids pick delicious birthday dinners! Mine would choose McDonald's! Yuck!
