Memories or the lack of

I choose to think about memories today and the odd ones we have.  Some things it would seem we should never forget, yet we do. Other things live with us forever for some unknown reason.  Recently I was talking with 2 people that should have many of the same memories I have. Yet we all remember completely different things. Some memories they have, I would have sworn I was not even there for.  It was like hearing a story for the first time. My mind just did not register the memory like theirs did.

Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in the memory as the wish to forget it.  ~Michel de Montaigne

It's surprising how much memory is built around things unnoticed at the time.  ~Barbara Kingsolver, Animal Dreams

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.  ~From the television show The Wonder Years

And this I believe to be so true and perhaps my favorite...

Memory is a child walking along a seashore.  You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things.  ~Pierce Harris, Atlanta Journal

My sister and brother have such different views of our child hood.
I am the baby so guess who always got picked on? Funny how they don't remember it that way.

I laughed when I read that you rememered an occassion totally differently than two other people. I have had those moments, and I start off looking at the other person like they are smoking something illegal. But then I turn it on myself, and I wonder if I dreamt my version of the event. It is such a bizarre thing!
I have read that this phenomenon is what makes it so difficult to be a credible witness in a court of law - we all see things differently based on our biases and experiences. Crazy stuff that!

I have a mind like a steel trap, but every so often, the Evil Twin will mention something and I have no recollection of what he's talking about. We've been together for 17 year, so either he's making stuff up or I have totally forgotten things!

It is amazing how people tend to have different memories of things, even though everyone was part of that memory together... Love the quotes! My favorite is:

Sometimes I wonder if I was there for some of my memories or have I heard the stories so much, I just think I remember. C.D. swears I can remember getting spanked by the DR. at delivery, but I really can't. Some things are just like yesterday, then my sister will talk about something and I think to myself, Really? Music is the one trigger I can rely on to bring it all back!
